Puerto Morelos, a small fishing town on the Mexican Caribbean coast between Cancún and Playa del Carmen, is home to two of the best-known resorts in the lifestyle world: Desire Riviera Maya Resort and Desire Pearl. Both are couples-only, all-inclusive and clothing-optional, and both are operated by Original Group, the company behind Temptation Cancun Resort and the Desire lifestyle cruises. They sit about five kilometres apart and share a concept: a sensual, adults-only holiday for open-minded couples, where what happens between guests is always their own choice.
The two resorts
Desire Riviera Maya Resort is the original property, on the beach just north of Puerto Morelos town. Its social life revolves around the pool, the beach and themed evenings.
Desire Pearl is a boutique resort within walking distance of the centre of Puerto Morelos, with around 65 rooms and suites, some with private plunge pools. Its clothing-optional areas include the beach, a jacuzzi lounge and a pool divided into a quiet zone and a party zone, so couples can choose their level of energy. Room listings for Desire Pearl state a minimum age of 21, with proof of age required at check-in.
Both resorts include meals, drinks and entertainment in the rate. Evening programmes are adults-only, with themed parties and shows. Exact facilities and themes change, so read the current descriptions on the official site before choosing.
Who they suit
- Lifestyle couples who want a resort where every other guest is also a couple and open-mindedness is the norm, not the exception.
- Curious couples who are new to the lifestyle and want a setting where watching, socialising and simply relaxing nude are all completely acceptable.
- Naturist couples who are comfortable with a flirtatious atmosphere.
Singles cannot book; these are couples-only resorts. If you want a nude resort without a lifestyle element, Hidden Beach Resort further south is a better fit.
Best time to go
The dry season from November to April has the most comfortable weather and the highest demand. Summer is hot and humid, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November. In recent years large amounts of sargassum seaweed have reached the Mexican Caribbean, mostly in spring and summer; it varies from week to week, so check current reports and ask the resort how it manages its beach.
Getting there
Cancún International Airport (CUN) is about 20 to 30 minutes away by road. Book a transfer with the resort or a reputable transport company; do not accept unsolicited offers inside the arrivals hall. Puerto Morelos is small and walkable, and Cancún and Playa del Carmen are each a short drive away.
Things to do nearby
- Snorkel or dive the reef of the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park, a protected marine area just offshore. Use licensed operators and reef-safe sunscreen.
- Swim in the cenotes, the freshwater sinkholes inland along the "Ruta de los Cenotes".
- Visit the Mayan sites of Tulum or Cobá on a day trip.
Rules and etiquette
- Consent comes first. Every interaction between couples requires a clear yes from all four people. "No" or silence ends it, with no need for explanation.
- Clothing-optional is not clothing-free everywhere. Restaurants and some indoor areas have dress codes, especially in the evening.
- No photography of other guests. Keep phones away in nude areas.
- Discretion outside the resort. Mexico is more conservative outside resort walls; public nudity in town or on public beaches is not appropriate.
Safety and consent
Agree your boundaries as a couple before you arrive, and have a simple signal for "let's leave". All-inclusive drinking makes clear communication more important; do not make decisions you would not make sober. Keep valuables in your room safe, drink bottled or resort-purified water, and use strong sun protection.
