Valalta is a naturist camp on the Istrian coast of Croatia, just north of the town of Rovinj, where the Lim Bay (Limski kanal), a long, narrow sea inlet, meets the Adriatic. Set among olive trees, pines and Mediterranean scrub, it is one of the largest and best-known naturist resorts on the Adriatic, with more than four kilometres of shoreline, swimming pools, restaurants, sports facilities, a daily entertainment programme and its own marina.
The resort offers several kinds of stay: camping pitches, bungalows, apartments and mobile homes, some right by the sea. It is family-oriented, with activities for children and a relaxed, international crowd.
Who it suits
- Naturist families who want lots of space, pools and children's activities.
- Naturist sailors, who can moor in the resort's marina.
- Couples looking for a sunny, nude holiday with the option of exploring Rovinj and inland Istria.
- Lifestyle couples who want a relaxing naturist break and are happy to respect a family, non-sexual atmosphere.
The resort
The coastline mixes pebble, rock, some sandy spots and paved sunbathing areas, with parasols and loungers available. The water is generally clear and good for snorkelling. The entrance to the Lim Bay is next to the resort, and boat trips, kayaking and cycling along the inlet are popular. Rovinj, one of Croatia's most photogenic old towns, is a short drive or bike ride away.
Note one practical point from Valalta's own site: the campsite does not take reservations for individual pitches, so check how pitch allocation works before you arrive; mobile homes, bungalows and apartments can be booked in advance.
What to pack
- A large towel or two for loungers, restaurant chairs and communal seating.
- Water shoes for the rocky and pebble shoreline.
- High-factor sunscreen and a hat; the Istrian sun is strong from June to September.
- A light layer for evenings, when the breeze off the sea can feel cool, and clothes for trips to Rovinj or the Lim Bay.
- A bicycle or bike lock if you plan to explore the coastal paths.
Best time to go
Valalta is seasonal, typically open from spring to autumn; check the official site for the current year's dates. July and August are the warmest and busiest months. June and September offer warm sea water, lower prices and more space.
Getting there
- By air: Pula Airport (PUY) is the nearest, roughly 45 minutes away by road. Trieste (TRS), Rijeka (RJK) and Venice (VCE) are longer drives.
- By car: Istria is well connected by motorway from Slovenia and Italy; Slovenian motorways require a vignette.
- By boat: Guests arriving by sea can use the resort marina.
Legal notes
Croatian law allows nudity on designated naturist beaches and in naturist camps, usually marked "FKK". Elsewhere, full public nudity can lead to fines under public-order rules. Public sexual behaviour is illegal. When you leave Valalta for Rovinj or the Lim Bay, dress normally.
Etiquette
- Always sit on a towel.
- No photographs of other guests without their consent.
- Respect the family atmosphere; naturism here is social, not sexual.
- Keep noise down at night in the camping and bungalow areas.
Safety
Rocky beaches mean water shoes are useful, and sea urchins live on some rocks. Use high-factor sunscreen and drink plenty of water; the Istrian summer is hot. If you go out on the water, keep an eye on the forecast, as summer thunderstorms can develop quickly.
Nearby
Just across the mouth of the Lim Bay is Koversada, founded in 1961 and one of Europe's oldest naturist camps. Rovinj's old town, the hill towns of inland Istria and the Roman amphitheatre in Pula all make good day trips. Browse naturist places in Croatia.
