Koversada, just south of the fishing town of Vrsar on Croatia's Istrian peninsula, is one of the names that built Adriatic naturism. It opened as a naturist campsite in 1961, when Croatia was still part of Yugoslavia, and for decades attracted naturists from across Europe. It is among the oldest naturist centres in Europe still operating.
Today the site is run by the Croatian hospitality group Maistra and is split into two: Koversada Uncovered Naturist Campsite, which keeps the naturist tradition, and Koversada Covered, a separate textile campsite. When booking, make sure you choose the naturist "Uncovered" campsite. Pitches sit in pine forest or near the sea, and modern mobile homes are placed close to the water.
Who it suits
- Naturist families and couples who like camping or mobile-home holidays by the sea.
- Dog owners, as the site has dog-friendly zones and a dog beach.
- Active travellers who want to cycle, kayak and explore Istria's coast and hill towns.
- Lifestyle couples looking for a quiet nude holiday, provided they respect the family, non-sexual atmosphere.
The site
The naturist campsite lies on the rocky Istrian coast near the mouth of the Lim Bay, with pebble and rock beaches, clear water and shade from pine trees. Facilities include restaurants and bars, sports areas, children's playgrounds and forest spaces for yoga and relaxation. The centre of Vrsar, with its harbour and old town, is under two kilometres away.
Best time to go
The site is seasonal. For 2026 the naturist campsite opened on 24 April and closed on 4 October; dates change each year. July and August are the busiest months, with high prices and full pitches. June and September offer warm sea temperatures and a calmer atmosphere.
Getting there
- By air: Pula Airport (PUY) is the nearest, roughly 45 to 60 minutes by road. Trieste (TRS), Rijeka (RJK) and Venice (VCE) are alternatives, further away.
- By car: Many guests drive from Central Europe; Istria is well connected by motorway. Slovenian and Croatian motorways charge tolls, and Slovenia requires a vignette.
- Locally: A car or bicycle is handy for exploring Vrsar, Rovinj and the rest of the Istrian coast.
Legal notes
In Croatia, nudity is permitted on designated naturist beaches and in naturist camps, which are usually marked "FKK". Public nudity outside those areas can lead to fines under public-order law, and topless sunbathing is widely accepted on ordinary beaches but full nudity is not. Public sexual behaviour is illegal.
Etiquette
- Towels on every seat.
- No photos of other guests.
- Respect families and children; naturism here is strictly social, not sexual.
- Dress when leaving the naturist area, including in Vrsar town.
Safety
The Istrian coast is mostly rock and pebble, so water shoes are useful, and sea urchins are common on rocks. The Adriatic summer sun is strong; use high-factor sunscreen, especially on skin that rarely sees the sun. Summer thunderstorms can arrive quickly, so keep an eye on the forecast if you go out by boat or kayak.
Croatia's naturist tradition
Naturism on the Croatian coast goes back to the 1930s. A famous early moment came in 1936, when the recently abdicated Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson were reportedly given permission to swim nude in a bay on the island of Rab. Koversada turned that tradition into organised naturist tourism, and dozens of FKK camps and beaches followed along the coast.
Nearby
A few kilometres south across the Lim Bay is Valalta, another large naturist camp near Rovinj. The Lim Bay itself, a long, narrow sea inlet, is famous for oysters and mussels and can be explored by boat. Browse naturist places in Croatia.
