Negril is a small town at the western tip of Jamaica that grew from a fishing village into one of the Caribbean's best-loved beach destinations. It has two personalities. To the north stretches the long, calm Seven Mile Beach, lined with resorts and beach bars. To the south, the West End is a rocky coastline of cliffs, caves and small hotels, famous for its sunsets. For people in the lifestyle, Negril matters because it is home to Hedonism II and several other adults-only resorts with au naturel areas.
Who Negril suits
- Lifestyle couples and singles who want a Caribbean holiday built around an adults-only resort, with the option to explore a relaxed beach town outside it.
- Naturists who are happy to be nude inside a resort and clothed outside it. There is no legal public nude beach in Jamaica.
- Couples who want romance rather than parties. Negril also has couples-only resorts that are not lifestyle venues; some have small, separate au naturel areas.
Where clothing-optional life happens
Because public nudity is illegal in Jamaica, every nude or clothing-optional area in Negril is on private resort land, screened from the public beach. The best known is Hedonism II at the north end of the beach, which has a full au naturel side and a clothing-optional side and welcomes both couples and singles. Some couples-only resorts, such as Couples Negril, have a designated au naturel section, but they are romantic resorts rather than lifestyle resorts, and guests there expect privacy.
Policies change, so read each resort's rules before booking: who can stay (couples only or also singles), which areas are nude, and whether day passes are sold.
Best time to go
The dry season from December to April brings the most dependable weather and the highest prices. May and June are warmer and quieter. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, peaking between August and October; many visitors still travel then, but flexible bookings and good insurance are wise.
Getting there and around
Fly into Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (MBJ). The drive to Negril along the coast usually takes around an hour and a half. Resorts arrange transfers, and licensed taxis and shuttle companies operate from the airport; look for official tourism-board licensing on taxis. Within Negril, route taxis and licensed taxis run along the beach road and out to the West End. Car hire is possible, but Jamaica drives on the left and rural roads can be demanding.
Things to do outside the resorts
- Watch the sunset from the cliffs of the West End, where several bars and restaurants have terraces over the sea.
- Swim and snorkel from the cliffs or take a boat trip along the coast.
- Visit the Negril lighthouse at the island's western point.
- Try jerk food and fresh fish at local restaurants rather than eating only at your resort.
Etiquette and local customs
Jamaica is a friendly but fairly conservative country in public. Swimwear is for the beach; cover up in shops, restaurants and town. Nudity or overtly sexual behaviour outside private resort grounds can lead to arrest and will upset local people. Photographing Jamaicans without asking is rude; always ask first.
On the beach you will be offered souvenirs, tours and other services. A polite "no, thank you" is usually enough. Buy tours from reputable, licensed operators.
Safety and consent
Negril is generally relaxed, but use common sense: take licensed taxis at night, keep valuables in your room safe and do not walk isolated stretches of beach after dark. Inside lifestyle resorts, the same rules apply as anywhere else: explicit consent from every person, sober decisions and boundaries agreed in advance with your partner. Anything offered for money is not part of the lifestyle, and SwingersPlayLive has zero tolerance for commercial sex.
