Hedonism II is one of the best-known adults-only resorts in the Caribbean. It sits on 22 acres at the northern end of Negril's long beach in western Jamaica, has around 280 rooms in low two-storey blocks, and runs on an all-inclusive model: meals, drinks, water sports and nightly entertainment are included in the rate. The resort markets itself to "couples and singles alike", which sets it apart from couples-only competitors, and it has a loyal following in the lifestyle community.
A short history
The property opened in 1976 as Negril Beach Village and was renamed Hedonism II in 1981. For decades it belonged to SuperClubs, the Jamaican group founded by John Issa. In 2013 it was sold to a company led by financier Harry Lange, with the Issa family keeping a minority stake. A sister resort, Hedonism III near Runaway Bay on the north coast, opened in 1999 and closed in 2011.
What the resort is like
The layout is split in two. One side is au naturel, with its own beach, pool and hot tubs, where guests are expected to be nude. The other side is clothing-optional, so swimwear is normal and nudity is accepted. Room categories follow the same division: when you book, you choose between "Au Naturel" and "Clothing Optional" rooms, so pick the side that matches how you want to spend your days.
Beyond the beaches, the all-inclusive package covers several restaurants, bars, a spa, a fitness centre, tennis, kayaks and scuba diving. Evenings revolve around themed parties and shows. The resort runs themed weeks, and lifestyle travel groups regularly book group stays, so check the calendar before you book; the atmosphere can vary a lot from week to week.
Who it suits
- Lifestyle couples looking for a sociable, party-oriented resort where open-minded guests are the majority.
- Singles who want a lively adults-only holiday; single men and women are both accepted, which is unusual for this kind of resort.
- Naturists who want a Caribbean nude beach with full resort service, as long as they are comfortable with a party atmosphere.
It is not a quiet romantic hideaway. Couples who want calm should look at Negril's couples-only resorts or smaller hotels on the West End cliffs.
Best time to go
Jamaica's dry season, roughly December to April, has the most reliable weather and the highest prices. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the greatest risk from August to October; storms are not guaranteed, but travel insurance that covers hurricane disruption is sensible. Because themed weeks shape the crowd, the calendar matters as much as the weather.
Getting there
Fly into Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay (MBJ). The road to Negril follows the north-west coast and usually takes around an hour and a half, depending on traffic. The resort can arrange transfers; licensed taxis and shuttle companies also operate from the airport. Norman Manley International in Kingston is on the other side of the island and much further away.
Rules and etiquette
- Nudity stays on resort property. Public nudity is not legal in Jamaica, so it is permitted only inside private resort grounds. Cover up if you walk out onto the public beach beyond the resort boundary.
- No photos of other guests. Keep phone cameras away from the nude areas and ask before photographing anyone.
- Read the house rules that come with your booking; they explain where public displays of affection are acceptable and what conduct is expected in shared spaces.
- Tip and treat staff respectfully. Staff are there to work, not to be part of guests' fun.
Safety and consent
An all-inclusive bar and a party crowd make clear communication more important, not less. Agree boundaries with your partner before you arrive, check in with each other during the evening, and remember that consent given after heavy drinking is not reliable. A no, a hesitation or silence is always a no. Use the in-room safe, stay hydrated and protect your skin; the Caribbean sun burns quickly on skin that rarely sees it.
