Vera Playa, on the Mediterranean coast of Almería in south-east Spain, is one of Europe's best-established naturist resorts. Part of the long El Playazo beach is a designated naturist zone, and behind it lies a cluster of naturist "urbanizaciones": apartment and villa complexes such as Vera Natura, Natsun, Bahía de Vera and others, where residents and guests live, swim and sunbathe without clothes. The zone also has Playavera, a naturist hotel run by Senator Hotels that describes itself as the first naturist hotel in Spain.
The atmosphere is calm and residential. Many visitors are long-stay European naturists, retired couples and families. It is a naturist destination, not a lifestyle one.
Who it suits
- Naturists who want a proper nude beach plus apartments, pools and gardens where being nude is normal all day.
- Winter-sun seekers, because Almería has one of the sunniest and driest climates in Europe and some complexes open year-round.
- Lifestyle couples who want a quiet, sunny base and are happy to follow naturist etiquette; there is no swinger scene here to speak of.
The naturist zone
Sources describe the naturist section of El Playazo as roughly one to two kilometres of sand, depending on where you draw the line, with the naturist complexes directly behind it. Inside the complexes, nudity is the norm at pools, gardens and often at on-site bars and shops. On the beach, nudity is expected in the naturist section. Outside the complexes and away from the naturist beach, dress normally.
Accommodation ranges from privately owned apartments rented out by the week to the full-service Playavera hotel. Check each complex's own rules: some have their own reception, restaurants and supermarkets; others are purely residential.
Best time to go
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September and October) are ideal: warm, sunny and not overcrowded. July and August are hot and busy with Spanish holidaymakers. Winter is mild and sunny by European standards, though the sea is cool and some businesses reduce their hours.
Getting there
- Almería Airport (LEI) and Región de Murcia International Airport (RMU) are the nearest, each roughly an hour to an hour and a half away by road. Alicante (ALC) has more international flights and is about two hours away.
- A car is useful. Vera town, Garrucha and Mojácar are all within a short drive for shopping and restaurants.
Legal notes
Spain has no national law against public nudity, but town councils can regulate it through local ordinances, and some cities restrict nudity to designated areas. In Vera Playa, naturism is long established in the naturist zone and complexes. As everywhere, sexual behaviour in public is illegal and not tolerated by the naturist community.
Etiquette
- Sit on a towel on loungers, chairs and benches.
- No photographs of other people. Many complexes forbid photography in common areas altogether.
- No staring or sexual approaches. Naturism here is social, not sexual.
- Follow each complex's rules about guests, day visitors and where clothing is required.
Safety
Almería's sun is intense from spring to autumn; use high-factor sunscreen and avoid the midday hours in summer. The beach is open to the sea and wind can raise waves, so check flags before swimming. Keep valuables in your apartment rather than on the sand.
Nearby
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, south-west along the coast, protects volcanic landscapes and remote coves, some of which are reached only on foot and are traditionally used for nude bathing. Inland, the desert landscapes around Tabernas were used as film sets for classic westerns. Browse naturist places in Spain or compare with Charco del Palo on Lanzarote and the dunes of Maspalomas.
