Berlin is one of the most body-positive cities in the world. Two traditions meet here. The first is FKK, or Freikörperkultur ("free body culture"), Germany's century-old naturist movement, which was especially popular in the former East Germany and still shapes attitudes: nude sunbathing at lakes and in some parks is ordinary for many Berliners. The second is the city's sex-positive nightlife, where a handful of clubs welcome adults of every orientation to dance, dress up and explore in a setting built on consent and discretion.
Sex-positive nightlife
The best-known venue is KitKatClub, founded in March 1994 and now located in Berlin-Mitte. It combines electronic music on several dance floors with a sex-positive atmosphere, an outdoor pool area and a diverse crowd of straight and LGBTQ+ guests. Its long-standing motto is "do what you want, but stay in communication". The club celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024.
Key things to know:
- Dress codes are strict and vary by night. Fetish, latex, leather, lingerie, costume or creative, expressive outfits are expected; ordinary streetwear is usually turned away. Check the night's code on the club's official channels.
- No photos. Phone cameras are covered at the entrance, and filming leads to immediate removal.
- Consent rules everything. An outfit or a location in the club is never an invitation. Ask, accept a no and respect people's space.
Berlin has other sex-positive parties and venues that come and go; follow reputable local listings and each organiser's rules.
FKK: nude bathing in and around Berlin
Local guides list many places where nude bathing is established:
- Teufelssee in the Grunewald forest has been a famous nude-bathing lake for decades, with a mix of families and city dwellers.
- Müggelsee, Berlin's largest lake, has a large nudist area next to the Strandbad in Rahnsdorf.
- Plötzensee in Wedding and Halensee in Wilmersdorf have nudist areas or lawns.
- In the Tiergarten, nude sunbathing on certain meadows is not officially permitted but has long been tolerated. Be ready to dress if other park users object.
- Several summer pools, such as Sommerbad Kreuzberg and Sommerbad Pankow, have lawn sections for nude sunbathing (but not nude swimming).
Berlin also has traditional naturist sports clubs, some dating back decades, that welcome new members.
Who it suits
- Couples and singles curious about sex-positive club culture in a safe, consent-focused setting.
- Naturists who enjoy swimming in lakes and relaxing in a city where nudity outdoors is culturally normal.
- LGBTQ+ travellers, as Berlin's queer nightlife is among the world's most important.
Best time to go
May to September is lake season, with long evenings and outdoor parties. The clubs run year-round, and winter weekends are busy. Queues on Friday and Saturday nights can be long.
Getting there and around
Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is linked to the centre by regional and S-Bahn trains in roughly 30 to 45 minutes. Public transport runs through the night on weekends, and the lakes are reachable by S-Bahn, bus and bike.
Legal notes
Germany has no general law requiring clothing outdoors, but nudity can be treated as a public nuisance where it disturbs others, which is why people stick to established FKK areas. Sexual acts in public are illegal. Inside private clubs, house rules and the law on consent apply.
Safety and consent
Berlin's clubs have strong cultures of care, but responsibility starts with you: go with a plan, agree boundaries with your partner, stay hydrated and keep an eye on each other. Most recreational drugs are illegal in Germany and all carry risks; never accept drinks you did not see poured. At lakes, swim only where it is permitted and watch for boats.
